1. The soft shadows in this picture are an effect of the roof on my parents-in-law’s porch and the white painted walls all around. The first two years of my son’s life we lived together with my wife’s parents in Natal, a relatively small beach town in the Northeast of Brazil. Caetano was born in 2001 and both my wife and I were still in university. I was studying photography at the Rietveld Academy in the Netherlands and travelled back and forth, while she was studying art education.

2. This photo was taken just a few minutes after my son’s - and wife’s - afternoon nap, around 3pm, when the sun is still burning hot. Caetano was hungry and unquiet and my wife wasn’t very happy to pose either, complaining about her hair. This was the only shot I got that day, but I do consider it one
