I was asked recently at a dinner party how I made money. Note, I was not asked what I did for a living. I waffled on a bit about buying and selling photographs, which seemed to create some interest around the table. All of the guests had bought items from antique dealers or antique auctions, some had bought paintings and sculptures, but only one was aware that there were photographic dealers and auctions. This rather brusque and provocative Yorkshireman related how he had seen a particular image of Jimi Hendrix and feeling that a dealer might rip him off and distrustful of auction houses, decided to track down the photographer to buy the image directly from him. This he did and became the proud owner of an editioned print which had impeccable provenance having been signed and numbered in front of him by the photographer himself. Supposedly an edition
