Light of Other Days – Taiyo Onorato & Nico Krebs

Light of Other Days is the new book by Swiss photography duo, Taiyo Onorato & Nico Krebs. The recent winners of Foam’s Paul Huf award present us with a series of 44 black and white photographs of curious deeds and objects taken in their Berlin studio. The images were captured on 20 x 24cm sheets of gelatin silver paper, creating unique positive prints. Often described as illusionists who dabble with photographic magic, Onorato and Krebs conjure apparitional scenes from previously mundane objects. With exposure times lasting for a number of minutes, they use household power drills to create swirling vortexes and turn light bulbs into entire planetary atmospheres. The cosmological overtones continue with Stanislaw Lem’s accompanying short sci-fi story, Memoirs of a Space Traveller, which reminds us of our own fallibilities and suggests that human nature is really to blame for all the imperfections in the universe – from the clustering of stars through to the premature existence of atomic bombs.
